The image of the Buddha is one of serenity and
detachment. No passion here but compassion, a universal compassion
for all human beings who must continue to suffer so long as they have
not mastered their desires. In both statuary and painting, the posture
of the Buddha’s body, the various positions of his hands, his
smile communicate absolute calm and mastery of self. For years now,
from temple to temple, from country to country, I have been following
that tender luminous smile of the Buddha.
